Books on French Wine, Vintage Wine and Fine Wine
There are numerous books on fine wine. The following are some that I find to be useful references and/or very interesting.
- Vintage Wine by Michael Broadbent
A superb reference book with tasting notes on virtually any wine that matters. It should be considered that Michael Broadbent opinions will come from a classic Bordeaux point of view, which is also my leaning. Broadbent’s new Pocket Companion is also very good for revised tasting notes and some reviews on vintages 2001 to 2005.
- Bordeaux by Robert Parker
Despite some unnecessary criticism of Robert Parker this book is superb. Well written, easily understood and a must as a reference. Parker’s view of a wine can be somewhat different to Broadbent’s as Parker favours a more modern style of Bordeaux.
- The Complete Bordeaux by Stephen Brook
A new and very informed, outstanding work.
- Winemasters of Bordeaux by Nicholas Faith
A good tale of the history and politics that are at play in Bordeaux.
- The Wines of Bordeaux by Clive Coates MW
- Bordeaux by David Peppercorn MW
- Bordeaux People, Power and Politics by Stephen Brook
An interesting analysis of the workings of Bordeaux and particularly the role of the negociants and courtiers.
- Pocket Wine Book by Hugh Johnson MW
An excellent pocket sized reference of all good wines.
- Hachette Wine Guide, The French Wine Bible
- Milady Vine, The Autobiography of Philippe de Rothschild by Joan Littlewood
The New France by Andrew Jefford
- The Oxford Companion to Wine
Edited by Jancis Robinson MW
- The Story of Wine by Hugh Johnson
For me this is one of the finest book on wine that has ever been written.
- Sauternes by Stephen Brook
- Chateau Latour The History of a Great Vineyard 1331-1992
Translated and adapted by Edmund Penning-Rowsell
Magazines and websites on fine wine
Again these are the magazines and websites that I find most useful and/or interesting.
