2002 VINTAGE

96 Beautiful apple, vanilla and honey aromas, with just the right amount of new wood. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with lots of pretty pineapple and honey. Long and refined. A beautifully silky and balanced Sauternes. Lots of intensity and well-knit. Unrivaled in this vintage.
96 2006 tasting. Pale gold with a slightly greener tinge than most young Yquem. Very fresh, long and deep-flavoured this wine has that ingredient X that Yquem always seems to manage, but this is certainly not one of the sweetest or most intense Yquems. It is certainly greater than any other 2002 sweet white bordeaux I remember tasting, with the strongly possible exception of Climens, but is almost spookily open for a recently-bottled Yquem. There’s the merest hint of astringency on the finish still but this wine could be enjoyed in its relatively simple youth.
94 Tasted at the château in March 2008 I love this vintage almost forgotten by 2003 and 2001. Tasted twice since last December, the wine starts to show-off a bit and is certainly not left behind in this flight. Yellow-green color. Initially a bit green on the nose, then revealing itself more subtle with airtime, it shows ginger, quince and vanilla characteristics. Light on the palate, nevertheless, this wine has such a particular grace. On the finish, the body fades a little bit while a delicious taste persists. I believe that this wine is still asleep. Wait until 2010-2012 and before 2030.

‘A persuasive case can be made that Yquem is Bordeaux's single greatest wine.'
Robert Parker

‘There is something very special, and indeed very consistent about Yquem. It is by quite some way the richest, most concentrated, most intense wine of its kind.' Clive Coates, Master of Wine
