"Red berry fruits with peppers and spice. Very good acidity, plenty of fruit, classy tannins, will improve." Decanter Magazine
Peter Bourne TheWineMan (Rating 92)
This highly regarded Domaine is run by the late Rene Monnier's daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Monnier is best known for their whites but here they have made a credible Volnay from the Premier Cru rated ‘Clos des Chenes' vineyard - a tiny .75 hectare plot. 2004 was "normal' vintage - more classic in style than the hot 2003 and plush ‘05's. It shows on the nose which is quite savoury with lots of dried herbs and a touch of charred meat along with the more typical black fruit bouquet. The palate is dark and brooding with intense, almost chewy flavours of morello cherries, black plums and loganberries. The firm structure carries these flavours with a thread of acid tightening the finish. Drink over 2-4 years.

‘This is a good source. The Rene Monnier domaine is run by Jean-Loius Bouillot and his wife, daughter of the late Rene Monnier, together with Xavier Monnot, a grandson of Rene Monnier. There is 100% de-stemming, two pigeages and two remontages a day. Temperatures are held at 30°C. Bouillot recognises the importance of low yields, aiming for 35 to 50 hectolitres per hectare." ‘Clos des Chenes - at the southern end of Volnay and where with Taille Pieds and Les Caillerets one will find Volnay's best wines. Clos des Chenes is a fuller wine maturing to velvet rather than silk. It is very pure in its expression of fruit, with a good grip of acidity and the ability to keep well.' Anthony Hanson MW
