The estate of Château Cos d'Estournel sits right on the southern border of the Saint-Estèphe appellation; just down the road lies Château Lafite Rothschild, in the neighbouring Pauillac commune.

Founded by 1810 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, the estate has changed ownership many times in the following 200 years. Cos d'Estournel is currently owned by entrepreneur Michel Reybier.

The 70-hectare, 30-parcel vineyard is planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%), with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Around 32,000 cases are produced each year. The wines from Cos d'Estournel are typically more Merlot-rich than other classified wines of the Left Bank.

95 This 1982 is still displaying a beautiful deep ruby/purple hue as well as a stunning set of aromatics consisting of blue and black fruits, loamy earth, flowers, liquorice, and spice box. The wine is medium to full bodied with sweet tannins, a medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a silky finish. It appears to have hit full maturity, but it can easily be held in a cold cellar for another 10 years.

94 Full medium red. Spicy aromas of redcurrant, strawberry, and plum. Ripe, lush, and gentle, with a mineral character contributing to the wine's impression of structure and leavening the wine's sweetness. Very long, ripely tannic finish shows slightly elevated alcohol but comes across as firm nonetheless.
