The estate of Château Cos d'Estournel sits right on the southern border of the Saint-Estèphe appellation; just down the road lies Château Lafite Rothschild, in the neighbouring Pauillac commune.

Founded by 1810 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, the estate has changed ownership many times in the following 200 years. Cos d'Estournel is currently owned by entrepreneur Michel Reybier.

The 70-hectare, 30-parcel vineyard is planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%), with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Around 32,000 cases are produced each year. The wines from Cos d'Estournel are typically more Merlot-rich than other classified wines of the Left Bank.

99 The purity of fruit in this is fascinating with plums, currants, and other dark fruits. Then there is another layer of spices and chocolate. So much cassis. Full and very layered with chewy polished tannins and a long, long finish. Just starting to open. Changes all the time. Still needs a year or two but gorgeous to drink already.
