The history of wine at Château Montrose dates back to 1815, when Etienne Théodore Dumoulin planted a vineyard on his patch of heathland that "Prince of Vines" Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur had sold to his family. Just 40 years later, the wine was already so good that it was included as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

Théodore continued to expand the vineyard, and by the time it passed to his heirs in 1861 it had reached its current size of 95 hectares. After passing through several more hands in the ensuing 145 years, it was finally purchased by Martin and Olivier Bouygues in 2006, who immediately embarked on a seven-year-long environmentally-friendly reconstruction of the estate.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant variety at Montrose, making up 60% of its vines. There are also parcels of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%), and Petit Verdot (2%).

90 The 2015 La Dame de Montrose has a tight-knit, blackberry and bilberry-scented bouquet with just a touch of violet borrowed from Margaux. The palate is medium bodied with fine tannin, quite minerally and energetic with a well-judged, Pauillac-inspired, graphite-tinged finish. This deuxième vinhas come on nicely during its élevage. Anticipated maturity: 2020 - 2030.
